The environment is our lifesource and is suffering from years of industrialisation, the byproduct of our modern life. Things need to be done to protect future generations from living with an even more untenable legacy. Reducing carbon emissions is one key step in contributing to our environments protection. Technology and networks today require a signficant amount of power to operate, and the push for always on connectivity regardless of location is forcing power consumption to continue to rise. The advancement of lower power technologies is offset by increases in speed and functionality, resulting in an ever increasing demand for power. Clever network design and control mechanisms must be employed to keep usage at its minimum. Employing alternative, environmentally friendly power sources is one immediate step that can make an impact on emissions.

 

In the long run however, new technology and design techniques are required that have carbon emissions and power consumption as their primary design criteria, whilst still delivering ever more advanced services and capbilities.
